Some four years ago, at the age of 71, I was diagnosed with an arthritic, unstable ankle.

Over the years, I visited a range of orthopaedic ‘medics’ but gained little towards a pain-free way forward. Variously, I was advised that – the feeder nerves could be blocked, injections (a very temporary relief) were available or ankle joint fusion which, in any event, I was told would not be suitable for me. Meanwhile, the pain levels were increasing, I was limping and sometimes had difficulty sleeping.

During my research for a way out of my plight, I found the London Foot and Ankle Centre and their enlightening website.

In August 2020, I made an appointment to see Mr Martin Klinke based on his remarkable CV and excellent patient reviews. During the first consultation, with kindness and understanding, he provided clear options and practical advice. I felt able to make a more informed decision and, with renewed confidence, opted for an ankle joint replacement.

It is now some three months since this life-changing operation.

I have been looked after very well – from the initial consultation, throughout the hospital stay and during a number of post-operative checks. A week after the surgery, I moved from a half plaster cast and bandages to a protective boot enabling me, in due course, to start walking with crutches and then without. After six weeks, I was able to walk without the boot, increasing the distance modestly each day. On seeing the dramatic pre-and post-operative x-rays and being able to walk without pain, it was evident what an earlier predicament I had been in.

I offer my heartfelt thanks to Mr Klinke, whose exceptional skill has enabled me to walk, once again, with ease. In the coming months, I look forward to an active lifestyle previously not possible because of an acutely painful and unstable ankle.
