Orthotics are devices used to alter or modify foot function in order to treat biomechanical foot disorders.

They range from simple, in-shoe devices, such as insoles, to custom-made orthotics designed to meet the individual needs of each patient.

The orthotics are created by taking a cast of the individual patient’s foot and designing a device which corrects and balances abnormalities.

Types of orthotics

Orthotics can be functional or accommodative.

Functional orthotics

Functional orthotics are used to correct an abnormality in foot biomechanics and are used in many foot and ankle disorders.By supporting the joints and reducing the impact in problem areas, the support stabilises the foot and prevents further injuries.

Accommodative orthotics

Accommodative orthotics are designed to relieve pain and where sometimes correction is not possible due to a fixed deformity of the foot, such as longstanding rheumatoid arthritis.

Ankle Foot Orthotics (AFO)

We also prescribe ankle foot orthotics, which are worn on the lower leg and foot to support the ankle and hold the foot in the correct position. These are used often following major nerve damage in the leg or after a stroke.
